At Mythological Creatures, our mission has always been to build the most comprehensive and accessible dictionary of mythical beings from cultures around the world, and to bring these fascinating stories and legends to life for modern audiences. After cataloguing more than 3,500 creatures on this site, we asked a simple question, what would the best of this archive look like in your hands?
The answer is the Mythological Creatures Field Guide series, five illustrated volumes, one each for the creatures of Japan, Greece, the Norse world, ancient Egypt and China.
How We Made Them
Every entry began the way everything on this site begins, with the sources. Myths rarely agree with themselves. The same creature can appear in contradictory versions across centuries of retellings, so we compared accounts across multiple scholarly references and kept what could be corroborated. Then we did what we love most, retold each legend in clear, vivid language and gave each being a photorealistic interpretation that honors how the old accounts actually describe it.
Then we built each book like a true field manual. Every creature gets its own multi-page dossier: a full-page portrait, stat bars rating its Danger, Magic, Power, Speed, Size and Spooky factor, its powers and weaknesses, and a legend retold. There are even survival tips for the day you meet one, quizzes to test yourself, and pronunciation guides so you can say every name like you mean it.
Each volume runs to over 100 pages and carries more than 80 photorealistic interpretations. Some creatures you may know. Many you almost certainly don't. All of them are depicted the way the legends say they looked.
